The competition was to be held in Lucerne, Switzerland from 11 to 21 December 2021.
Switzerland made this decision due to the emergence of a new strain of COVID-19 "omicron". Switzerland has already introduced full quarantines with several African countries, Denmark, Belgium, and the UK.
«It’s a pity that we will not be able to host this event. We would like to thank everyone who worked hard and invested in this event», said Mike Kurt, President of the Swiss University Sports Association.
There remains a chance that the Universiade can be moved to another place, including reschedule, but there is little chance of that.
The Universiade is held every two years, so it is quite logical to postpone it to the next year.
