The Norwegian stayed in the shadows for most of the race, and when his rivals made mistakes, he moved into the lead and carried it through to the finish.
Johan Botn, along with Philipp Nawrath, were the only two athletes to hit all 20 targets and avoid penalty loops, and it was these two who battled for victory in the final mass start of the season.
For a long time, Eric Perrot was leading. After the second shooting, he broke away with a 10-second advantage over Laegreid, Lombardot, Claude and Botn. The Frenchman continued to push the pace, but a miss at the first standing stage allowed Nawrath and Botn to catch him.
At the final shooting, Perrot shot inaccurately but extremely fast, and even with a penalty loop he was only eight seconds behind the leading pair. It seemed that just a few hundred meters more and he would catch them, but that did not happen — the Frenchman ran out of energy and had to settle for third place.
The Norwegian thrilled the home crowd by holding off Philipp Nawrath’s attack on the finishing straight. At the line, they were separated by just 0.2 seconds.
