Czech biathlon star Marketa Davidova, despite smiling from her hospital bed, is going through one of the most difficult moments of her career.
The 29-year-old athlete has undergone serious back surgery and now faces a major challenge — returning to a pain-free life before even thinking about competing again.
“I discussed the examination results with several doctors, and they all agreed that surgery was necessary.
They decided to treat my herniated disc with an implant and also reinforced my vertebrae with screws.”
A season overshadowed by pain
It is now clear how difficult the past season was for the Czech athlete. She suffered from a herniated disc early in the year and had to miss her home World Cup stage in Nové Město.
Even at the Olympic Games in Antholz, Davidova competed through pain in the mixed relay and sprint but was far from her best level.
“I now have six weeks of complete rest to allow the vertebrae to heal properly. After that, I hope to slowly begin rehabilitation.”
An uncertain future
The possibility of a forced retirement now hangs over the 29-year-old’s career. While she remains positive, she is realistic about what lies ahead.
Biathlon places heavy strain on the back, and returning to top-level competition after such surgery may prove impossible.
“I will decide based on what my body allows. For now, the priority is for the implant to settle and the tissue to regenerate.”
