Tommaso Giacomel, who was on track for a sensational season, lost everything within a matter of hours after suffering heart issues.
At the Italian federation media day on April 14, 2026, the Italian appeared marked by the experience, but still determined.
Before the Olympic Games, Giacomel was leading the overall World Cup standings and was a top contender for both the Big Crystal Globe and Olympic gold. However, sudden heart problems forced him to end his season prematurely.
A difficult ordeal
Going from the dominant athlete on the circuit to a patient in just a few days has been a major psychological challenge.
“The season was going well as long as I could race. I don’t have much else to say — I am sad and angry about what happened,” he said.
“The Olympic silver medal matters, it was my first and it’s good for the team.
But my goal was to come home with more medals.”
Back to training and ambitions intact
Now the focus is on rebuilding, and Giacomel reassures his fans:
“I’m fine now, I’ve started training again and everything is going well.”
