Julia Simon wins the mass start, Oeberg and Magnusson battle for the podium

Elvira Oeberg already had an 11-second advantage after the first shooting, which she completed phenomenally fast, and with open space ahead she pushed the pace. She also shot clean at the second prone, while many of her rivals made mistakes — Simon, Fialkova, Vittozzi, Jeanmonnot and Kirkeeide all went to the penalty loop. However, unlike the others, Julia Simon managed to fight her way up to second place even with a miss.

Problems began for Elvira Oeberg on the standing stage. With one miss she lost the lead to the Frenchwoman. Simon then slowed her pace somewhat, allowing the Swede to close the gap before the final shooting. But it proved to be the right move — Julia Simon produced another perfect shoot and left the range alone in the lead heading into the final lap, while Oeberg had to ski another penalty loop. The question of the winner was effectively settled.

The fight for second place, however, was intense. None of the immediate chasers managed to clear all the targets, but Anna Magnusson and Marlene Fichtner did, moving just ahead of Elvira Oeberg. The trio was already 30 seconds behind Julia Simon, while seven seconds further back were Minkkinen and Johansen, though neither the Finn nor the Norwegian managed to join the battle.

Marlene Fichtner dropped off from the Swedish pair even before the main climb, and Anna Magnusson could not match Elvira Oeberg’s pace on the track.
