Lisa Vittozzi wins Olympic pursuit, Kirkeeide and Minkkinen on the podium

Already at the first shooting, Oceane Michelon put herself in serious trouble with two misses. All the other leaders shot clean, while Lisa Vittozzi and Lou Jeanmonnot also managed to gain more than 10 seconds on the race leader.

At the second prone, the athletes shot very carefully, but both Kirkeeide and Jeanmonnot made one mistake each. Vittozzi, however, was flawless and significantly faster than her rivals on the range, which allowed her to move ahead of the Norwegian and the Frenchwoman.

Oceane Michelon recovered and reduced the gap to 20 seconds. Suvi Minkkinen and Milena Todorova were close behind, while Franziska Preuss trailed by 32 seconds.

The leading trio soon broke apart, as Maren Kirkeeide chose to push her own pace and pulled five seconds clear of her two rivals. That speed did not prevent her from shooting clean. Lisa Vittozzi also avoided mistakes, but Jeanmonnot dropped out of the leading group with one penalty loop, falling 35 seconds behind. Right behind her were Suvi Minkkinen and Franziska Preuss, both still shooting clean. Oceane Michelon was another seven seconds back, which still left her with at least a chance to fight for bronze.

The two Bulgarians, Hristova and Todorova, were skiing strongly but were already more than a minute behind, making their medal hopes very slim.

At the final standing, Maren Kirkeeide took her time but still missed twice. Lisa Vittozzi, however, delivered a perfect performance — 20 out of 20 — and left the range in the lead. Since all her rivals behind her, except Suvi Minkkinen, missed, her advantage grew to 40 seconds over the Finn.

Kirkeeide trailed by just five seconds, and Jeanmonnot by eleven. With great effort, Kirkeeide caught Minkkinen, but the Finn refused to let go and held on tightly. Jeanmonnot, however, could not close the gap to that pair and finished fourth.

Lisa Vittozzi won on home soil, earning her first medal after silver in the mixed relay.

Suvi Minkkinen, although she finished a few meters behind the Norwegian, kept the pressure on her all the way to the finishing straight and can be satisfied with the bronze medal.
