Martin Ponsiluoma storms from seventh place to win pursuit gold

Already at the first shooting, almost all of the main contenders — those who had started within one minute of Quentin Fillon Maillet — missed. Only Ponsiluoma and Perrot avoided the penalty loop, but they were too far back to make a major impact at that stage, closing the gap only slightly.

Everything changed at the second shooting. The current leader, Fillon Maillet, missed twice and dropped far down the standings. Botn also missed twice and fell out of contention. A new leading trio emerged — Laegreid, Christiansen and Jacquelin — but Ponsiluoma, Dale and Perrot were not far behind.

At the first standing stage, Christiansen and Laegreid made mistakes, while Jacquelin hit five out of five and took the lead. Ponsiluoma lost only a little time.

But at the final shooting, even alone in front, Jacquelin felt the pressure and missed two targets. Ponsiluoma, trailing by 20 seconds, shot clean and left the range as the new leader heading into the final lap.

Laegreid, Dale and Perrot arrived 10 seconds behind. They took longer on the range, and only Laegreid cleared all five targets. At the start of the final lap, he joined Jacquelin, who had just completed his two penalty loops. They were 15 seconds behind the Swede, but no real fight for gold followed.

Laegreid immediately distanced himself from Jacquelin, and the gap grew so quickly that there were concerns about the Frenchman fading again, as had happened earlier in the week. But Emilien managed to hold on, as he still had a 25-second cushion over Perrot and Dale.

For Ponsiluoma, this is the first Olympic gold medal of his career. For Laegreid, it marks his third individual medal of these Games.
