Tommaso Giacomel wins the Annecy mass start, Christiansen shocks at the finish

Only 12 athletes out of 30 completed the first prone shooting without a miss. All Norwegians and French athletes, except for Perrot, Frey and Lombardot, missed at least one target.

However, the leaders were moving at such a slow pace that Martin Ponsiluoma almost made up his penalty loop. Botn, Giacomel, Fillon Maillet, Claude, Christiansen, Dale and others gained around 15 seconds.

After the second shooting, the leading group became slightly smaller, but they continued at a controlled pace, allowing many athletes to rejoin. Even Botn’s 18th place, just 35 seconds behind, did not look dramatic.

At the standing shooting, the Swedes eliminated themselves with two misses each, creating an unusual leading trio: Tommaso Giacomel, Eric Perrot and Justus Strelow. The closest chasers — Christiansen, Frey and Botn — were 30 seconds back, more than one penalty loop.

On the course, the Italian decided it was time to push the pace. The German and the Frenchman dropped back immediately, and by the final shooting Giacomel had built a 15-second advantage.

No drama followed at the range: all three leaders shot clean, and positions seemed settled. Even Justus Strelow appeared safe in third place, holding a 20-second gap over the chasers — but that proved not to be enough.

Vetle Christiansen and Johan-Olav Botn managed to close the 20-second gap to the German, and on the finishing straight Christiansen passed Strelow, stealing the bronze medal.
