Vetle Christiansen wins the sprint in an incredibly tight battle

The entire top ten was packed within just 26 seconds — an exceptionally close margin by modern biathlon standards.

Johannes Dale started with an early bib number and, despite two missed shots, set the first real benchmark of the race. As it turned out, he was far from the only one struggling on the range.

Martin Ponsiluoma, Sebastian Samuelsson, Emilien Jacquelin and Sturla Laegreid all failed to hit all ten targets, with the Swedes in particular having to ski two penalty loops. Even Philipp Nawrath could have been in the fight for victory, but a single miss ended his chances.

Things went very differently for the Norwegian trio of Christiansen, Botn and Bakken. And while Johan-Olav Botn and Sivert Bakken missed out on the podium despite perfect shooting, Vetle Christiansen — unexpectedly for everyone, and perhaps even for himself — emerged as the winner.

It seems unlikely that he will be able to stay even in the top three tomorrow.
