The International Biathlon Union (IBU) is preparing to change the World Cup overall standings rules in the event of a tie between athletes.
It is not unusual for the IBU to hand out awards on a regular basis. Each year the federation organizes World and European Championships, both for seniors and juniors. On top of that, athletes receive distinctive bibs during the season, and the year always ends with multiple Crystal Globes awarded in the World Cup as well as in the IBU Cup.
This system allows many biathletes to be rewarded every season and stands in contrast with other sports, where trophies are rarer and often distributed on a two-year basis.
Starting from the 2026/27 winter season, if two athletes finish the year tied for first place in the overall standings, both will receive a Crystal Globe. The tie will no longer be broken by counting the number of first, second or third places.
This regulation will remain in force for at least four years.
