Bad news came from Germany yesterday. It is reported that former German biathlete Laura Dahlmeier died in the mountains while attempting to conquer Laila Peak.
Dahlmeier retired from biathlon six years ago and has since pursued mountaineering professionally and with great enthusiasm. Earlier this June, she summited another peak in the same mountain range—Great Trango.
On July 28, Laura and her climbing partner set out to conquer Lyra, but were caught in a rockfall. Her partner suffered minor injuries and managed to call for help, but Laura was hit harder. In addition, the rockfall separated the two climbers.
According to Bild, Laura was initially alive and called for help via radio, but her partner could not reach her, and over time even the radio contact was lost.
On July 29, Laura’s partner was rescued, but Dahlmeier herself could not be found. As night was falling, the rescue operation was suspended. Today, July 30, heavy fog has settled over the mountains, so four mountaineers have gone out in search, but given the nature of her injuries, there is no chance of finding her alive.
Laura ended her biathlon career at age 25 and has died at the age of 31.
