This season, the French have won all the men's relays, but at the World Championships they are losing. Without any obvious failures or penalty loops, the Norwegians were slightly stronger than their counterparts at each stage, and by the last stage they were winning against the French by 46 seconds. Johannes Boe saw it through to the end, waving to fans, coaches, and even stopping on the track for photo opportunities, greeting Fillon Maillet, and imagining himself as a seagull. Johannes Boe hasn't been so swaggering for a long time.
If by the middle of the race it seemed that second place was within reach, and the Czech Republic, Finland, and Germany were only 20 seconds behind France, then by the last stage the gap had increased to one minute, and the remaining teams were left fighting only for bronze.
Quite predictably, the Swedes joined this fight at the end, with their strongest ones saved for the last legs. Philipp Horn versus Samuelsson, a shooting duel in which the Swede misses the last shot, losing 13 seconds. Seba first tried to catch up with Philipp, but then gave up, bronze for Germany.
