Surrogacy in Ukraine: Better you think

When Sarah and Michael Scott (names are changed) from New York discovered they couldn’t naturally conceive, their journey to parenthood took them halfway around the world to Ukraine—a country emerging as a global leader in surrogacy.

Why do you have to choose Ukraine?

Surrogacy in Ukraine, especially gestational surrogacy, is popular among international couples mainly because of three important factors:

Affordable Costs

In Ukraine, Surrogacy programs cost significantly less than those in Europe or the United States. Even after considering the costs of travel, accommodation, and other related expenses, couples find Ukraine to be a financially attractive option.

Clear Legal Protection

Ukrainian laws clearly protect the rights of intended parents. From the moment the embryo is implanted, the child is legally considered theirs. The surrogate mother cannot legally claim any parental rights, which means parents can feel secure knowing there won't be disputes or complications later.

Quality of Medical Services

Many people get their information about countries or nationalities only from movies. Just remember "Eurotrip", where four Americans spent $1.50 on a vacation like kings in Slovakia.

Perhaps many people have stereotypes about Ukraine, especially in the area of medicine and infrastructure. That it is a third world country, similar to poor Africa.

However, Ukraine has a good medical system, and private medicine is one of the best in Europe. After the war began, more than 5 million Ukrainians left for Europe, and they were all surprised by several things: good roads, high salaries, and poor medicine.

Yes, Ukrainians were outraged that they had to wait a month for their visit to the doctor, and after his visit not receive any intelligible help. Because in Ukraine this is not accepted. Private medicine in Ukraine is such that today you make an appointment with a doctor, tomorrow you get an appointment, the day after tomorrow you take all the tests, and the next day you go to the doctor again with all the results of the tests, and get an accurate diagnosis and treatment, and all this at ridiculous prices.

Therefore, you can be sure that surrogacy is no exception, and everything will be at the highest level. Regular tests, examinations and consultations with doctors - there is no way around it.

Although Ukraine might not be widely known for its medical services abroad, the private healthcare sector—particularly in reproductive medicine—is of a high standard. Many people underestimate Ukraine's medical capabilities, but there’s strong evidence of quality care: Ukrainians living in Europe regularly travel back to Ukraine specifically for dental treatments because the service is better and more affordable. Not only Ukrainians, but also citizens from neighboring European countries like Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and even Germany frequently visit Ukrainian dentists for the same reasons. This shows the quality and trustworthiness of Ukrainian healthcare providers.

Modern Facilities and Experienced ART Specialists

Ukraine’s capital city, Kyiv, hosts several advanced medical clinics specialized in ART procedures. Facilities adhere to stringent international standards, including "Clean Room" GMP technology. Leading professionals from the fields of gynecology, endocrinology, psychology, and law collaborate closely to provide a holistic approach to surrogacy, ensuring medical efficacy and emotional support.

Baby on Board, a Kyiv-based surrogacy agency, exemplifies the meticulous approach adopted by Ukrainian providers. Their cooperation with internationally accredited medical centers ensures cutting-edge technology and exceptional patient care.

Patient surrogacy experiences

The impact of Ukraine’s surrogacy programs is perhaps best expressed through the voices of those who have completed their journeys:

«We never imagined we’d travel across the globe to have our baby,» shared Emma and Lucas from London. «But the clarity and assurance provided by Ukrainian law made our decision easy. Today, we hold our daughter, grateful every day for the surrogate who made this possible.»

Thomas and Isabella from Toronto echoed similar sentiments: «Our surrogate was wonderful, and the process was transparent from start to finish. Knowing our rights were protected allowed us to focus on the excitement of becoming parents.»

«Initially, we were anxious about the distance and cultural differences," said Rachel and Benjamin from Tel Aviv. "But the professionalism and compassion shown by everyone involved quickly dispelled our fears. Ukraine gave us the greatest gift imaginable.»

Requirements for parents

You may have noticed from the names that all the couples are a man and a woman. In Ukraine, surrogacy is only allowed for heterosexual couples.

The eligibility criteria for intended parents are precise: only officially married heterosexual couples with proven medical indications, such as the absence or severe deformation of the uterus or multiple unsuccessful IVF attempts, can qualify for the surrogacy program. Additionally, at least one intended parent must have a genetic link to the child.

Donors

Complementing the surrogacy process, Ukraine also provides anonymous egg donation programs, regulated by rigorous standards. Donors aged 18-36 undergo extensive medical, psychological, and genetic screening, ensuring the best possible outcomes for intended parents.

While Ukrainian law straightforwardly establishes parental rights, intended parents must still navigate their home country's legal framework post-birth. The process can take three to eight weeks, varying by nationality. Countries including the United States, Canada, the UK, Spain, and Israel generally have clearly defined pathways for granting citizenship and passports to newborns born via surrogacy abroad.

For couples worldwide, Ukraine represents not just a chance at parenthood but a supportive, legally secure environment that transforms hope into reality.
